Tarafex keeps one catalogue. The data sheet is the recipe joined to it. The declaration is issued from it and then frozen. EPR kilograms are shipments from it, with the weight frozen on the line. The three documents cannot drift, because there is nothing for them to drift from.
A spreadsheet will split a document total across several lines if you ask it to. Tarafex will not: a weight is taken only when it is unambiguous per unit. A spreadsheet will add the pallets into the placed-on-the-market total. Tarafex will not: reusable is held apart, so a country's rule is yours to apply, not a formula's. A spreadsheet will tick Article 5 because the row turned green. Tarafex will not.

A spreadsheet has no memory of when. Correct a cell and every past total changes with it, silently, including the ones already filed. A spreadsheet has no author: a cell holds a number and nobody remembers who said it. And a spreadsheet cannot ask your supplier anything — Tarafex sends a link, no account and no password, and the answer comes back in their own language with a name and a date on it. These are not conveniences. They are the things a workbook is structurally unable to hold, and they are what an auditor asks for first.
Ask an assistant how to work out packaging kilograms and it hands you a spreadsheet: packaging, material, weight per piece, pieces per year, kilograms per year. Then, in the same answer, it says the scheme or the service provider does not take over your responsibility for the figures being right. That is the honest part, and it is also the whole competitor — a template, plus your own attention, every year.
The models also disagree with one another about the law. In a single week they placed the French professional-packaging stream as already running, as postponed to 2027 and as not worth mentioning; recyclability at scale as 2030 and as 2035; the microenterprise rule as needing a supplier in the same member state and as anywhere in the Union. A spreadsheet cell holds a number. It does not hold the date, the source or the method behind it, so a year later nobody can tell which answer was used. Tarafex holds all three beside the figure, which is what makes it defensible.
Because a workbook answers one question once. Every new customer sheet, every new country, every corrected weight means describing the same packaging again somewhere else. Tarafex is one catalogue with three outputs — the customer's sheet, the declaration and the kilograms per country — built from the same lines. Describe an item once; answer with it as many times as you are asked.
Three things, and none of them is a matter of effort. It cannot refuse: it will compute whatever you type, including a document total split across lines and pallets added into the placed-on-the-market figure. It cannot remember when: correct a cell and every past total changes with it, including reports already filed. And it cannot ask your supplier anything.
It sends them a link. No account, no password, nothing to install, and they answer in their own language about substances, weight and origin. The answer arrives with a name and a date and stays their word, not yours — which is exactly what Article 16 entitles you to and what an auditor asks for. A cell in a workbook holds a number and nobody remembers who said it.
Nothing, and that is the point. The weight is frozen on the line at the moment the movement happened, so correcting the catalogue next year does not reach backwards into a report already submitted. A report is a statement about a period. In a workbook the same correction rewrites history in silence, and nobody finds out until somebody compares two years.
A weight is taken only when a document states it unambiguously per unit — no splitting a total across lines and calling the result data. Reusable packaging is held apart instead of being added into the single-use kilograms. An article is never marked satisfied because a row turned green. Every one of those is a number a spreadsheet will happily produce and no one can defend afterwards.
It carries all 27 Member States in one table — the register, the threshold, whether a foreign producer needs a representative, and whether the register exists yet — each line dated and with its source. Nobody maintains that in a workbook, and a country tab named after a material is how EPS ends up counted as plastic.
It does not register you in any country, it is not your authorised representative, it does not pay a scheme and it certifies nothing. A supplier's declaration is their word, your own declaration is your word, and neither is a test report or the Annex VII technical documentation — that you hold yourself. Everything it does produce, you can download in ordinary files at any time.
